Here in Southeast Indiana, we’d like to extend a very warm welcome to Special Olympics Indiana, which will hold their 2011 Winter Games at Perfect North Slopes next month. Scheduled for Jan. 9-11, the three-day competition will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 9 with the start of Winterfest (an event featuring demonstrations, activities and games), followed by the Opening Ceremonies. The next two days will feature time trials and final competition rounds as the Special Olympic athletes hit the course.
Special Olympics Indiana is a non-profit organization that provides sports training and athletic competition opportunities to both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It’s a terrific organization whose mission of empowerment resonates with all of us. We’re thrilled that Special Olympics Indiana has chosen Dearborn County as the site of their 2011 Winter Games. For more information on volunteering at this event, contact the Dearborn County Visitors Center at 800-322-8198. To learn more about the upcoming Winter Games, visit the Special Olympics Indiana website or check them out on Facebook.

It may seem hard to believe, but New Year's Eve will be here next week! Looking for something fun to do? You’ll find several New Year’s Eve events on the agenda in Southeast Indiana this year:
For food, fun, and nonstop gaming excitement, head to Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, where you can enjoy a great meal and some fun at the casino before dancing the night away at Boogie Nights, the ‘70s and ‘80s night club located right on the property.
An evening of dancing will also be on the agenda in downtown Aurora, where the annual New Year’s Eve Senior Dance on Main will take place from 6pm-12:30am. Enjoy a delicious dinner, then dance the night away to the classic country sounds of the Wooden Axles. Tickets are required in advance and include admission, dinner, soft drinks, snacks, a midnight toast and party favors.
Finally, you won’t want to miss the New Year’s Eve Ski Party at Perfect North Slopes. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing until 1am, or dance the night away inside the lodge, where a DJ will supply the tunes all evening. Also not to be missed: the annual Ski Patrol torchlight parade down the slopes – an impressive sight indeed! Before you head out, say goodbye to 2010 with a spectacular fireworks show at midnight.
Happy New Year!

There's just something magical about gliding around an ice rink, especially during the holidays. People are smiling, families are hanging out together, and for a little while, it's easy to forget about everthing except keeping your balance and enjoying the experience.
Here in Southeast Indiana, we're excited to announce that the Winter Wonderland Ice Rink is now open for another season. Located beneath the pavilion at Todd Creech Park in downtown Lawrenceburg, the covered outdoor ice-skating facility makes for a great getaway at this time of year. Ideal for families, friends, and grandparents and grandchildren, ice skating is terrific exercise and lots of fun to boot.
To skate at Winter Wonderland, you can bring your own ice skates, or rent a pair for a $1 fee. The rink will remain open through Jan. 16, although it is closed on certain days. For a full list of rink hours, click here. Don’t forget your mittens!
