The “A Roar of Thunder” Aurora Regatta will return to Southeast Indiana this weekend for two full days of powerboat racing along the Ohio River. The 14th-annual event will feature powerboat racing in two separate speed classes as part of the Powerboat Superleague points circuit, plus a unique professional powerboat driving school in which participants can experience the thrill of tunnel boat racing firsthand.
Scheduled to take place Aug. 18-19 at Aurora’s Lesko Park, the free event is one of Southeast Indiana’s most popular, typically attracting upwards of 10,000 spectators each year. The boats can reach up to 120 miles per hour as they slice through the water along the one-mile course.

In addition to two full days of racing (including the Championship Finals on Sunday), this year Aurora has been selected as one of only six venues in the nation to host an APBA (American Power Boat Association) professional driving school. Two two-seater powerboats will be available for the training, which includes safety and capsule training and on-the-water experience in a tunnel boat. Once the course has been completed, participants will have the opportunity to show off their new skills during two boat demonstrations as part of the annual Powerboat Super league races. (Participants must be at least 18 years old, and the cost per person is $350).
The Regatta also features free parking, food and refreshment booths and an air show demonstration each day. The event is organized by Aurora Riverfront Beautification, Inc. and offers free admission thanks in part to the generosity of many local sponsors.
